MoPe - Diversity to Fields

The route of ex situ seed samples via seed propagation to cultivation, crop processing and consumer's table. Drawing by Annika Michelson

Diversity to fields project (MoPe) is a three-year (2021-2023) development project seeking solutions to increase genetic diversity in fields in Finland by utilizing landraces and old commercial varieties. The project develops and strengthens the operating model of the seed propagation network established in 2017 with 75 persons and 156 landraces or old commercial varieties mainly ex situ stored in NordGen. Of these, 110 are accessions of rye, oats, wheat and barley, the rest are buckwheat, broad beans, peas and grasses. In addition to seed propagation, the project collects information on the cultivation history, plant characteristics and quality factors. Field trials and chemical analysis aim to assess their usefulness from the point of view of production and further processing. The results are communicated in the project webinars, website, newsletters and social media.
